Why Is My Electricity Bill So High? A Systematic Diagnostic Checklist
കറന്റ് ബിൽ അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി കൂടിയോ? കാരണങ്ങൾ ഓരോന്നായി പരിശോധിക്കാം.
A sudden jump from ₹3,000 to ₹6,500 rarely happens for no reason. In Kerala, unexpected bill increases are almost always traceable to one of 5 distinct regulatory, seasonal, or physical factors. Use the interactive checklist below to diagnose your bill.
Step-by-Step Diagnostic Checklist
Review each culprit below. Expand items to see detailed calculations and actionable escalation steps.
Mark items that apply to your household to narrow down the cause of your bill jump.
1. Seasonal Air Conditioner & Cooling Surge
Did AC or cooling usage increase during warm/humid months?
A 1.5-ton 3-star inverter AC typically consumes 1.2 to 1.5 units per hour of operation. Running one AC for 7 hours each night adds approximately 8 to 10 units daily—totalling 480 to 600 units across a 60-day billing cycle by itself.
2. The 250-Unit Non-Telescopic Cliff
Did your monthly consumption cross from 250 to 251 units?
3. Additional Cash Deposit (ACD) Demand
Is there an unexplained lump-sum line item on your bill?
4. Delayed Meter Reading (>60 Days Cycle)
Did the meter reader arrive later than Day 60?
5. Earthing Leakage or Neutral Voltage Drift
Could power be leaking to the ground through a damaged appliance?
Never attempt to open the KSEB sealed meter box, dismantle main distribution cutouts, or touch service drop conductors. If you suspect earthing leakage or neutral voltage drift, always call a Government Licensed Electrical Contractor or Certified Wireman, or contact KSEB Customer Care at 1912.
